Beginner’s Yoga 1

Welcome to Your Yoga Journey

In many yoga classes, especially those with large groups and mixed experience levels, essential elements of the practice are often overlooked. This can make it challenging for instructors to address key aspects such as proper breathing (which differs from regular breathing), body alignment, Drishti (focused gaze), and bandhas (the engagement or "locking" of specific energy centers in the body). Without these foundational components, a yoga practice remains incomplete.

Yoga for beginners— In this course, students will explore the fundamentals of yoga. While it is primarily designed for those new to yoga, it can also benefit anyone seeking a refresher on the basics.

Understanding the fundamentals is essential for building a strong foundation in your yoga practice. This course includes a brief introduction to the history of yoga and places a strong emphasis on breathwork. Students will learn how coordinating breath with movement (asana) is key to developing a safe, effective, and enriching yoga practice.

You will learn the basic Three-Part Breath (Dirga Pranayama), Ujjayi breathing and how to synchronize this specific breathing technique with yoga movements—both when transitioning in and out of poses and while holding them. This coordination of breath and movement is known as Vinyāsa. Vinyāsa links one pose to the next in a flowing sequence, and without proper breath control, it becomes nearly impossible to practice Vinyāsa—or any yoga asana—effectively.

Although recommended textbooks are available for this course (you can purchase these at our studio or online), you will also receive handouts containing comprehensive information to support your learning.

Recommended textbooks for this course are (most of the text is available online):

“The Sivananda Companion to Yoga: A Complete Guide to the Physical Postures, Breathing Exercises, Diet, Relaxation, and Meditation Techniques of Yoga”

The Heart of Yoga: Developing a Personal Practice Revised Edition by T. K. V. Desikachar

Ashtanga Yoga: The Practice Manual by David Swenson

What You Will Learn:

¨     - A brief history of yoga

¨     - Fundamental yoga poses and their benefits

¨     - The importance of mindfulness in your yoga practice

¨     - How to develop and personalize your own yoga routine

We will also explore the principles and significance of:

¨     - Three-Part Breath (Dirga Pranayama) - calms nervous system and increases awareness

¨    -  Ujjayi breathing – a foundational yogic breath technique

¨     - Kapalabhati – a cleansing and energizing breath practice

¨     - Anuloma Pranayama – also known as alternate nostril breathing, for balancing energy

¨     - Vinyāsa – a flowing sequence of movements that synchronizes breath (especially Ujjayi) with each transition and posture, and more!
